# Terminology and product names

> How to write Mixpanel, plan names, feature names, credentials, and data residency regions in docs

Use the same name for the same thing on every page. Readers and AI agents both treat a new term as a new concept.

## Mixpanel

Write **Mixpanel** with a capital M and a lowercase p. Don't write MixPanel, mixpanel, or MP in prose. Lowercase `mixpanel` is fine in code, package names, and URLs.

## Plan names

Capitalize plan names when you mean the plan: **Free**, **Growth**, and **Enterprise**.

| Do | Don't |
| - | - |
| This feature is available on the Growth and Enterprise plans. | This feature is available on growth and enterprise plans. |
| Enterprise customers can request a custom retention period. | enterprise customers can request a custom retention period. |

Keep the words lowercase when they're ordinary adjectives: "a free trial," "enterprise-scale data volumes."

## Feature and report names

Capitalize product feature names to set them apart from the ordinary words. Examples include Insights, Funnels, Flows, Retention, Boards, Lexicon, Session Replay, Experiments, Feature Flags, and Data Pipelines.

When a feature name is followed by a generic word, keep the generic word lowercase: "Funnels report," "Lexicon entry," "Session Replay settings."

| Do | Don't |
| - | - |
| Open a Funnels report. | Open a Funnels Report. |
| Add the report to a Board. | Add the report to a board. |
| Check the event in Lexicon. | Check the event in the lexicon. |

Match the name that appears in the product. If you're not sure how a feature is capitalized, check the UI or the feature's main docs page.

## Boards

Boards is a Mixpanel feature. A Board is a collection of reports, text, and media that shows your key metrics in one place. Write "Board" or "Boards," capitalized. Don't use "dashboard."

| Do | Don't |
| - | - |
| Add the report to a Board. | Add the report to a dashboard. |
| Share the Board with your team. | Share the dashboard with your team. |

## Generic terms

Keep common technical nouns lowercase: internet, email, website, ecommerce, app, web, mobile, server-side, client-side.

Capitalize names of teams and departments, but not the words "team" or "department": "contact the Support team," "ask your Sales team."

## Credentials and identifiers

Use the exact name of the credential the reader needs. Different credentials have different security requirements, so mixing them up can lead readers to expose a secret.

| Term | Use for | Notes |
| - | - | - |
| project token | The identifier that SDKs use to send data to a project | Don't call it a key or a secret. |
| API secret | The deprecated project secret used by older API workflows | Mention it only where older workflows still need it, and point readers to service accounts for new integrations. |
| service account | The credentials used to authenticate API requests | Say "service account username" and "service account secret." Remind readers to store the secret securely. |
| project ID | The numeric ID of a project | Don't confuse it with the project token. |
| organization ID | The numeric ID of an organization | Write "organization ID," not "org ID," in prose. |
| `distinct_id` | The identifier Mixpanel uses for a user | Use code font when you refer to the property. |

When a page tells readers to handle a secret, say where to find it and remind them not to commit it to source control or expose it in client-side code.

## Data Residency

Data Residency is a Mixpanel program that lets customers choose the region where their data is stored and processed. Each region is a named offering within the program, so capitalize the region names. When you refer to the program as a whole, write "the Data Residency program," with "program" lowercase.

Mixpanel stores data in one of three regions. Use these names:

| Region | Name in prose |
| - | - |
| United States | US Data Residency |
| European Union | EU Data Residency |
| India | India Data Residency |

Each API has a different host in each region. See [API hosts and data residency](https://docs.mixpanel.com/docs/code-examples.md#api-hosts-and-data-residency).

On first mention in a page, use the full name, such as "EU Data Residency." After that, "the EU region" is fine.

| Do | Don't |
| - | - |
| If your project uses EU Data Residency, send data to `api-eu.mixpanel.com`. | If your project uses EU data residency, send data to `api-eu.mixpanel.com`. |
| India Data Residency is part of Mixpanel's Data Residency program. | India Data Residency is part of Mixpanel's Data Residency Program. |

## Abbreviations

Spell out an abbreviation the first time you use it on a page, followed by the short form in parentheses: "customer data platform (CDP)." After that, use the short form.

You don't need to spell out abbreviations that most readers know, such as API, SDK, URL, HTML, JSON, CSV, and SQL.

Don't use Latin abbreviations in prose. Write "for example" instead of "e.g.," and "that is" instead of "i.e."
